The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) registers every legitimate operator. You can verify any lottery at acnc.gov.au before buying. If a draw’s operator isn’t listed there, don’t enter.
Why Ticket Pool Size Matters More Than Prize Value
Two draws can offer a $2.8 million prize home at $10 per ticket and be completely different in value. One might cap at 200,000 tickets. The other might cap at 1,000,000. Your odds in the first draw are five times better than the second — for the same price and the same prize.

The Five Active Operators in 2026
Dream Home Art Union (formerly RSL Art Union) is Australia’s largest prize home lottery. It funds RSL Queensland’s veteran support services. Draws regularly offer prize packages above $10 million including multiple homes, cars, and gold. Ticket pools are large — which means odds are longer — but the prize values are the highest in the country.
Mater Lotteries runs frequent draws from Brisbane funding Mater Hospital research and patient care. The current Lottery 324 offers a $5.68 million Gold Coast waterfront home with a Land Rover Defender and $100,000 in gold bullion. Mater sells up to 8.5 million tickets per draw — the largest pool of any operator — which gives the longest odds of the major lotteries.
Endeavour Lotteries (Endeavour Foundation) supports Australians with intellectual disability. Their draws offer a choice between a property prize and a cash or gold equivalent — a flexibility no other major operator offers. Lottery 466 closes 9 April 2026 and offers a Coolum Beach house or $3 million in cashable gold. Tickets are $10 each.
Yourtown (formerly BoysTown) funds Kids Helpline, Australia’s 24/7 counselling service for young people aged 5–25. Deaf Connect (formerly Deaf Australia) runs the Deaf Lottery supporting deaf and hard of hearing Australians with hearing services, Auslan programs, and mental health support. Draw 229’s ticket pool is capped at 2,000,000 — making it the only major draw with a publicly confirmed pool size this cycle — for a $1 million “Win Your Way” prize where the winner chooses cash, property, vehicles, or travel. How to Compare Draws Before You Enter
Three questions to ask before buying any ticket:
1. What is the total ticket pool? Ask the operator directly or check their terms and conditions document. Some publish it upfront. Some don’t. If they won’t tell you, that’s worth knowing.
2. How many tickets have sold so far? A draw that closes in three days with 80% of tickets still unsold is a different proposition to one closing in three days with 95% sold. Fewer tickets sold means better odds for remaining buyers.
3. What is the full prize package? “Win a $2.8 million home” sometimes means the home plus furniture, insurance, rates, and transfer fees. Sometimes it means just the property. The difference can be worth $50,000–$100,000 in real costs to you as the winner.
What Happens When You Win a Prize Home
Winning a prize home is not the same as receiving a cash payment. There are real costs and decisions involved that most articles don’t cover.
The lottery operator handles legal transfer of title. You do not pay transfer costs in most draws — these are included in the prize. But from settlement day, all ongoing costs are yours: council rates, strata fees if applicable, building insurance, and land tax depending on your state.
You are not required to live in the property. Most winners choose one of three paths: move in, rent it out as an investment, or sell it immediately. Each path has different tax implications.
Lottery winnings are not assessable income in Australia — the ATO does not tax the win itself. But capital gains tax applies when you sell a prize property at a profit, calculated from the property’s market value on the day you received it.
